SOV; 14 consonants and 10 vowels (5 long, 5 short); stress is largely phonemic; inalienable/alienable possession; inclusive/exclusive pronouns; verb serialization.
Shifting to Alor Malay, the local variety of Malay. Some young people, all adults. Children and adolescents are rarely more than passive speakers of their language (Schapper 2014). Also use Abui [abz], mostly by speakers of Western Kamang, and their dialect shows substantive lexical influence from that language (Schapper 2014).
