ISO 639-3:
kneThese are conclusions derived from personal observations.
Kankanaey (https://www.ethnologue.com/language/kne) and Kankanay, Northern (https://www.ethnologue.com/language/kne) are dialects of the Kankanaey Langauge (also spelled as Kankana-ey).
The claim that Kankanaey (Central) and Kankanay (Northern) are separate languages is based on political opinions rather than a scholarly linguistic point of view. Both dialects share close relations and speakers of each variety will find the other intelligible.

Dear Roldan,
Thank you for this information on Kankanaey [kne] and Northern Kanakanay [xnn] in the Philippines.
Ethnologue follows the ISO 639-3 Standard for language identification. At some time in the past, separate codes were given to Kankanaey [kne] and Northern Kanakanay [xnn]. In order to merge these 2 codes - and the languages they reference, change request forms must be submitted to the ISO 639-3 Registrar (iso639-3@sil.org). If this request is accepted by ISO, then we can make the change in the Ethnologue.
Best wishes,
Chuck Fennig
