Although largely shifting to Russian, the Assyrian-populated villages in the Ararat and Kotayk Provinces have local schools that provide Assyrian language classes, though not an integral part of the curriculum (https://rm.coe.int/armeniaecrml5-en2c-docx/16809fc12e p. 17).

It is also worth noting that the 2011 census shows that out of the 2,769 Assyrians living in Armenia, 2,256 have identified Assyrian as their mother tongue, and only 81 have chosen Russian.

Editorial Action

We will update the L1 and ethnic populations as well as the EGIDS and Speaker Age Range values for Assyrian Neo-Aramaic [aii] in Armenia, for inclusion in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
