319,000 in Malawi looks too high. A Google search "kokola people malawi" has quite a few Malawian sites that are around 200,000. From my interviews of people, I am certainly not getting the idea that there are many people speaking Kokola there. Just looking at the map, it also appears very unlikely that the Malawian population would be greater than the Mozambican population as there must be an area in Mozambique about 10X as big. My contacts also say that the Malawian population is being slowly absorbed into Chichewa while in Mozambique the language is much more vibrant. 

Editorial Action

We will update the L1 speaker population for Kokola [kzn] in Malawi, for inclusion in the next edition of the Ethnologue.

Thank you for this information on the Kokola [kzn] speaker populations in Malawi and Mozambique.

We will be looking into updating the Kokola population in Malawi for the next edition, coming out in February 2023.
