"Pingdi Yao (Piongtuojo, Piongtoajeu) is a variety of Chinese with 1,000,000 speakers, half of whom are members of Yao nationality, Guangdong Province, Hunan-Guangxi border. Daoist, traditional religion."

What is Pingdi Yao? Is it "Shaozhou Tuhua" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaozhou_Tuhua )?

Dear Antoine,

Thank you for bringing up this question about Pingdi Yao in China.

From what I can find, Pingdi Yao is not Shaozhou Tuhua, nor is it related (specifically) to Northern [cnp] or Southern Pinghua [csp]. Both PeopleGroups.org (https://www.peoplegroups.org/explore/groupdetails.aspx?peid=7349) and Joshua Project (https://joshuaproject.net/people_groups/18653/CH) report that the Pingdi Yao speak Xiang Chinese [hsn] . Joshua Project adds that the 1990 national census placed them under 2 nationalities, Yao and Han.

So, (1) the comment needs to be taken out of Iu Mien [ium] and put under Xiang Chinese [hsn], and (2) the other half (Han) should be added to the comment (i.e. "half of whom are members of the Yao nationality, the other half of the Han nationality").

Best wishes,

Thanks. I don't have access to this source but it mentions Pingdi Yao: https://www.jstor.org/stable/27052283

Worth checking it?
