Antoine,

The citation "1981 R. W. Young" refers to an unpublished source. In other words, back in the 14th edition (2000), when this name and date first appears, someone spoke with R. W. Young or received a letter or an unpublished document from this person. (Ethnologue uses the format (date - last name with first initial) for unpublished sources.)

I know that this is not a very satisfying response, especially since it would be quite difficult to find out who R. W. Young actually is.
