Comments
Dear Antoine,
I initially began to update the indigenous languages in Canada with the 2021 Canada census, but then stopped since the numbers seemed very high compared to what was in there from the 2014 FPCC (Report on the status of B.C. First Nations' languages. Brentwood Bay, B.C.: First Peoples' Cultural Council).
I will take another look at the 2021 census and reconsider. I have already updated the numbers for the other non-indigenous languages.
Best wishes,
Chuck Fennig
Managing Editor, Ethnologue
Are L1 and L2 numbers both high? Or only L2? I remember reading (but where?) that the number of L1 speakers slightly decreased in the 2021 census but that there are more and more heritage learners of indigenous languages who declare themselves as speakers.
