The census gives 4,857,819 speakers but we have another count: why? Would be good to add information after "2011 census" because otherwise it looks like a mistake.

Editorial Action

We will update the L1 population comment for Lambadi [lmn] in India, all to be included in the next edition of the Ethnologue.

Dear Antoine,

Thank you for taking a look at the Lambadi [lmn] (India) entry.

In the 2011 census report, Lambadi is listed as a "mother tongue" under the HINDI heading. Since Lambadi is listed as a separate language in the Ethnologue (and by ISO 639-3, which we follow), we take the "mother tongue" figure from the census of 3,280,000.

However, there are other "mother tongues" under the HINDI heading, such as Banjari, Gorboli, and Sugali. These names Ethnologue has listed as alternate names of Lambadi. Therefore, I have assumed these to be part of Lambadi (ie. probably dialects).

To make this all clearer, I will list these 3 names as dialect names, then re-do the population line to be: "5,080,000, including 1,580,000 Banjari, 50,300 Gorboli, and 171,000 Sugali (2011 census)."

Best wishes,

Chuck Fennig
