Using "x" vs "kh"

Nodir Nazarov, Tue, 2022-05-31 12:09
Regarding:
General Remarks
Country:
Uzbekistan

Across the texts there is an errouneous usage of "x" in English text when it comes to region/town names. While "x" in Uzbek writing is phonetically close to "kh" as in the word "hard", in English writing it should be written as "kh", I think. Examples:

"Bukhoro", not "Buxoro",

"Khorezm", not "Xorezm"

"Jizzakh", not "Jizzax"

"Surkhondaryo", not "Surxondaryo".

Editorial Action

We will change the spellings of the 4 administrative divisions (regions) in Uzbekistan from "x" to "kh".  These changes will be included in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
