20,000 (Blench 1988), decreasing. Ethnic population: 32,000 (Decker et al 2021k). Population is difficult to estimate, especially in the case of the Bauchi, where civil unrest has caused the area unsafe to visit. Many Bauchi people have fled the area as refugees.

Rubu (Tù-rùbó), Wayam (Tũ-wãyã, Vũwãyã, Ãwãyã), Supana (Hɨpɨna, Tihɨpɨna, Vihɨpɨna), Bandeke (Adeka, Madaka, Ndəkə, Tundəkə, Vundəkə), Guda (Mɨɨn, Mɨn, Tiimɨn, Vwinyi), Asamburu. Lexical similarity: 63% Asamburu and Bandeke, 56% Asumburu and Rubu, 40%–55% Asumburu dialect with Fungwa [ula], 56% Bandeke and Guda, 67% Rubu and Supana (Decker et al 2021k).

Language Use

Some shifting to Hausa [hau]. Some of all ages. All also use Hausa [hau] (Decker et al 2021k). Many also use English [eng], especially young adults (Decker et al 2021k).

Other Comments

Due to civil unrest, many Bauchi people are relocating to safer towns, where Hausa [hau] is the LWC (Decker et al 2021k). Muslim.
