The historical and population-wise capital of Emilia is Bologna, definitely not Reggio Emilia. Emilian is a pluricentric language. Each town has its own dialect and does not quite recognize the dialects of other towns as legitimate, let alone superior. But at any rate, if one city must be chosen, that has to be Bologna, which is the administrative capital, largest city of the region, and has the longest tradition of written Emilian.

Editorial Action

We will add dialect names for Emilian [egl] in Italy, based on town names that are listed as alternate names, with Bologna as the center. These changes will be included in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
