A community orthography has been developed and is in use in the community, primary for Bible translation. Portions of Genesis have been translated, and translation of Mark is beginning.

Based on a recent census Yulianus Wau, community leader, reports that there are currently just over 550 speakers of Abawiri / Foau. Most of these live in the village of Fuau while roughly 100 individuals live in more urban areas. Population growth has occurred due to medical advances; intergenerational transmission continues unbroken.

We will update the L1 speaker population for Foau [flh] in Papua, Indonesia, to be included in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
