historical and current status of the Puri language
I am from the Puri people and research our language. For more than a decade, my people have been working on revitalizing our language. We have speakers with varying proficiency degrees. However, many sources state that our language is extinct. There are currently no Puri speakers as L1, but there are Puri adults who communicate in the language, and we make various educational efforts to teach the language. It is inappropriate nowadays to consider the language as extinct. We even have words that survived after the 19th century and have made it into the current century, such as the word “txori” /ʧo.ˈɾi/ (forest). Thus, I recommend changing the status of the language from “10 – extinct” to “9 – Reawakening”.
We will change the status of Pur [prr] in Brazil from Extinct to Reawakening, to be included in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
territorial location of the Puri language
Historically and currently, we speak Puri in all-Southeastern Brazilian states. (PURI, PURI, PURI, 2020) I, for example, was born in Rio de Janeiro and now live in São Paulo, where part of my clan, Teyxokawa, is located. Thus, I suggest changing “Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states” to “Southeast region of Brazil (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo states)”.
