The 2017 census in Peru registered a total of 5,084 persons in the four peasant communities where Quechua is spoken in the department of Amazonas: 3,574 in La Jalca, La Jalca district, Chachapoyas province; 708 in Lonya Chico, Lonya Chico district, Luya province; 420 in San Carlos, San Carlos district, Bongará province, and 382 in Huancas, Huancas district, Chachapoyas province.  This total shows the ethnic population.  Far from all of them speak the language, as the same census registered only 840 Quechua speakers in all of the department of Amazonas, and this last figure calls for a revision of the 7,000 figure given currently for 2003.
