turTurkish is not a language native to Afghanistan. There are native speakers of dozens of other languages in Afghanistan, but those languages are not listed for Afghanistan - Chinese, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, French, and so forth. On what basis was Turkish chosen to be listed?
Editorial Action
We will remove the entry for Turkish [tur] in Afghanistan. This change will be made in the next edition of the Ethnologue.

Dear David,
Thank you for this recommendation to remove Turkish [tur] as a language of Afghanistan.
I am also interested in the languages that Ethnologue currently does not list for Afghanistan. Would you have any information (i.e. census report, etc.) that you could send to us?
Thank you.
Chuck Fennig
Managing Editor, Ethnologue
Please clarify the official response. Was this recommendation approved or rejected?
Leclerc 2017 is cited as stating that there are 9500 users of the Turkish language in Afghanistan. Could you please send me that article so that I can read it?
I regret that I do not have a census report for other languages that Ethnologue currently does not list for Afghanistan.
Hello David,
At this late date, I came across your comments about the removal of Turkish [tur] as a language of Afghanistan. I apologize for not coming back to this in April after posting my original comment in late February.
Yes, I did remove Turkish as a language of Afghanistan from the database, but unfortunately that happened just after the publication of this edition (25th), so Turkish will be there until the 26th edition is published next year.
Here is a link to the Leclerc article where he posits 9500 speakers of Turkish in AF (https://www.axl.cefan.ulaval.ca/asie/afghanistan.htm).
Please let me know whenever you have any updated census reports on the languages of Afghanistan.
Best wishes,
Chuck
