Uyghur Ethnicity but not Language
In 2011, a survey of Uyghur people in Faizabad city of Badakhshan province in Afghanistan concluded that the Uyghur people had done a complete language shift from Uyghur to Dari. (Note: to Dari; not to Uzbek, which is much more similar to Uyghur). Over several generations, they had completely shifted language to the point that no one in the community still spoke Uyghur. So ethnically, Uyghur people still can be found in Afghanistan, but linguistically, they are Dari speakers.
We will add an ethnic population and change the L1 population to zero, giving Uighur [uig] in Afghanistan an EGIDS 9, all for inclusion in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
New Entries for Afghanistan
Several languages that previously were not listed as languages of Afghanistan in the previous editions of Ethnologue now are listed as languages of Afghanistan:
- Azerbaijani, North
- Khowar
- Punjabi, Western
- Sindhi
- Uyghur
These languages are not native to Afghanistan. They should not be listed as languages of Afghanistan.
No action taken.
Remove Turkish from Afghanistan
Turkish is not a language native to Afghanistan. There are native speakers of dozens of other languages in Afghanistan, but those languages are not listed for Afghanistan - Chinese, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, French, and so forth. On what basis was Turkish chosen to be listed?
We will remove the entry for Turkish [tur] in Afghanistan. This change will be made in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
