Gallo has been reckognised as one of the two specific languages of Brittany by many local authorities, including the one in charge of linguistic policy, namely Region Bretagne, in 2004 (see https://www.bretagne.bzh/actions/langues-regionales/), and the French State in 1999 and 2008 (see https://www.culture.gouv.fr/Thematiques/Langue-francaise-et-langues-de-F...). Brittany and cultural organisations have set up an official Institute in charge of gallo (https://institutdugalo.bzh/fr/accueil/). Various academic researches have confirmed this status (see https://www.cairn.info/revue-cahiers-internationaux-de-sociolinguistique... or https://www.cairn.info/revue-cahiers-de-sociolinguistique-2007-1.htm).

Dear Philippe,

Thank you for this information on Gallo, currently listed as a dialect name for French [fra] in France, in the Ethnologue.

Ethnologue follows the ISO 639-3 Standard for language identification. Since Gallo is not included in this standard, change request forms would need to be submitted to the ISO Registrar (iso639-3@sil.org) as a means of establishing Gallo as a separate language. Once Gallo has been accepted in this way, with its own 3-letter code, then it would be added to the Ethnologue database. Instructions for the 2 forms (Request for Change & Request for New Language Code Element) can be found here: https://iso639-3.sil.org/code_changes/submitting_change_requests.

Best regards,

Charles Fennig

Dear Chuck. It sounds very strange that the ISO could have any appropriate knowledge about languages. Anyway, I will inform the President of Brittany of the process needed. Thank you!
