E18 said: "1,300 (1995). Ethnic population: 6,000. 140 Maronites in Kormatiki, 80 to 100 in Limassol, the rest in the Maronite community in Nicosia."

So how come E25 says: "9,760 (2013 UNSD)."

Is 9,760 the ethnic population? The total number of users? L1 users?

Editorial Action

We will update the L1 speaker population for Cypriot Spoken Arabic [acy] in Cyprus, for inclusion in the next edition of the Ethnologue.

Dear Antoine,

The E18 population came from an older, unknown source. The 2013 UNSD number is from the 2011 Cyprus census, published by UN Statistics Division.

More recently, we have questioned the number of speakers reported by this census, and have lowered the number, based on the Joshua Project Cyprus country page.

Best wishes,

So will this number be lowered in the upcoming E26 edition?

Chuck Fennig, Wed, 2022-12-21 15:57

Yes, it will.

Here's another source: "The Cypriot Maronite community currently numbers roughly 5,000 individuals. However, only approximately one thousand are CyA speakers (estimates range from 900 to perhaps 1300; Council of Europe 2017)." https://zenodo.org/record/3744513#.Y7MCyOzP23I
