Standard Arabic in Turkey
What's the source for 686,000 standard Arabic users in Turkey?
Standard Arabic is only acquired through education. It wasn't taught in non-religious elementary schools before 2016 (see https://www.al-monitor.com/originals/2015/11/turkey-arabic-education-div... and https://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/arabic-to-be-offered-as-second-languag... ).
No action taken, at the present time. This is tied into the decision that needs to be made about Standard Arabic [arb] in all the countries where it is spoken.
Russian, French, German, and English
600,000 Russian speakers but only 4,300 French speakers, 47,000 English speakers, 6,700 German speakers => doesn't make sense when there are so many schools in Turkey where the sole medium of instruction is English, French, or German. Either the Russian number is too high, or the others are too low. (probably a combination of both...)
We will remove the 600,000 figure for Russian [rus] speakers in Turkey, for inclusion in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
Dari, Pashto, Uzbek
There are between 100k and 500k Afghan refugees in Turkey (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghans_in_Turkey )
Based on the linguistic stats of Afghanistan, we could update the language counts of Dari, Pashto, and Uzbek in Turkey accordingly.
Iranian Persian?
682,000 [pes] speakers in Turkey? What's our source?
I can't find anything about Iranian Persian being spoken in Turkey and there are not that many Iranian immigrants in Turkey.
Could it be a confusion with some Kurdish or Zaza speakers? Or Dari-speaking Afghan refugees?
We will update the L1 speaker population for Iranian Persian [pes] in Turkey, for inclusion in the next edition of the Ethnologue.
