Error in count

Regarding:
Population
ISO 639-3:
apc

"Total users in all countries: 31,437,480 (as L1: 29,778,480; as L2: 359,000)."

But 29,778,480 + 359,000 = 30,137,480

I don't know which number is correct though.

Levantine Arabic in Brazil

dusseaux.antoine_289191, Sun, 2022-04-03 03:20
Regarding:
Population
ISO 639-3:
apc

The current edition says: "700,000 in Brazil (Guedri 2008), increasing. Ethnic population: 7,000,000 (2015)."

But the source (Guedri 2008) says the opposite: Levantine is falling into disuse in Brazil: https://repositories.lib.utexas.edu/handle/2152/20152

"In exploring three generations in the Lebanese-Brazilian community of São Paulo, Brazil, first-generation immigrants are believed to have more variability in their spoken Portuguese, with this variability extending to loanwords of Arabic origin. Subsequent generations are believed have less access to the Arabic language, and have less variability in their spoken Portuguese, however are expected to experience some influence of Arabic when perceiving and producing words of Arabic origin."
Editorial Action

We will remove the speaker number change ("increasing") from North Levantine Spoken Arabic [apc] in Brazil for the next edition of the Ethnologue.

Map of North Levantine in Turkey

In addition to my remarks sent to Chuck by email about the map being wrong (North Levantine isn't widespread in Israel for instance), I think the map of Turkey could be more accurate.

Map 9.2 (p. 259) in Prochazka, Northern Fertile Crescent offers a really accurate and up-to-date map of where Levantine is currently spoken in Hatay and nearby provinces. Here's the link on Google Books: https://www.google.fr/books/edition/Arabic_Historical_Dialectology/pzRtD...

I can send you the PDF if you want to.

There's also Map 16.1 in Brustad and Zuniga p. 404: https://www.google.fr/books/edition/The_Semitic_Languages/XcPADwAAQBAJ?h...

The mapping team is taking a look at this for possible revisions on the Turkey map for North Levantine Spoken Arabic [apc].

Even stronger in North Levantine as Lebanese poet Said Akl created a dedicated Latin-based alphabet to write Lebanese, and several Lebanese authors wrote and translated books and articles using this alphabet during the last century, cf.:
